If I have been at your place then i would have done it like below.
- Read the basic SAP help from help.sap.com on variant configuration Variant Configuration (LO-VC) - SAP Library
- Philipp Kuster made life easy of the many beginners by writing an document and i would have refer that to setup a basic VC model in system using link Introduction to Variant Configuration with an example model
- If i am not clear and stuck up at very basic like , how to write and how many dependencies , i would have created 1 KMAT, a Super BOM with just 3 materials as component , used basic selection condition selection with syntax like ( characteristic 1 = ' 1') which will select component 1 from BOM.
- If it would not be working , i would have created my post on SCN explaining my VC structure , screen shot showing what i did , and my expectations from the VC i setup. I certainly wouldn't expect people will create an VC model and send me screen shot of each and every step when i cant do the same for my own knowledge building.
- I hope or say i am sure with this approach i would have save lot of my as well as fellow community members time and would have been move ahead to setup my next VC version 0.2 to add more features like other dependencies , change quantity , etc.
- And last but not the list i would have marked replies helpful if it have help me.

May be you can also try to follow this approach , hope it may help you.
Thanks
